5.1, 7.1: What Are These Numbers?

These numbers represent the channels in your surround sound system. The first digit indicates the number of speakers in the setup. So, in a 5.1 configuration, you’ll find five channels, which translates to five speakers.

Now, the second number is all about subwoofers. In a 5.1 setup, you’ll have five speakers and one subwoofer. If you come across a third number, such as 5.1.2, that means you’ve also integrated two Dolby Atmos upward-firing or in-ceiling speakers. It’s important to note that surround sound systems can scale up significantly, offering more depth and immersion as you add more speakers to the mix.

Where Do I Place Each Speaker?

To create an immersive audio experience, the placement of your speakers is crucial. Let’s start with the basics:

Front Left, Front Right, and Center Channel Speakers: The center channel speaker is a star player, delivering most of the dialogue in movies. It should be positioned as close to ear level as possible, either above, below, or behind your screen. If achieving this isn’t possible, you can angle it up or down to ensure sound is directed towards the listeners’ heads. The front-left and front-right speakers should flank your screen, ideally angled toward the seating area.

Expanding to 5.1 or 7.1 Systems: As you expand your setup to 5.1 or 7.1, you can add left and right surround speakers beside the seats. These additional speakers enrich the audio experience and create a more dynamic soundscape. Two rear speakers should also be placed behind the viewers, providing ambient sounds and allowing audio to move seamlessly across the room.

The Mighty Subwoofer: The subwoofer is the powerhouse that delivers those deep, rumbling sounds you feel in your chest during action-packed scenes. When it comes to subwoofer placement, you have some flexibility. It typically sits on the floor and can be positioned at the front, in a corner, or near a side wall. However, avoid placing it flush against a corner or wall, as this can result in muddied or harsh bass tones. Ideally, leave about six inches of space around it for optimal sound quality.
