3 Things That Set REL Acoustics Subwoofers Apart

What Makes REL Subwoofers Different?

REL Acoustics manufactures one thing and one thing only: subwoofers. While most audio brands dip their toes into a variety of speakers, REL wanted to be the best in the world at one thing. By focusing solely on subwoofers, we’d say they’ve achieved that: their subwoofers have won ample awards and recognitions.

Here at HiFi Buys in Atlanta, GA, we’re proud to have REL Acoustics subwoofers on our showroom floor. When customers are looking for extra bass in their listening room or home theater, we encourage them to give REL subs a listen.

But what makes these high-end subwoofers any different from other brands? Here are three reasons why REL subwoofers stand out.

1. Speed

Nothing drags down audio performance like a subwoofer that lags slightly. Even milliseconds of delay can disrupt the audio illusion in your mind. That’s why REL Acoustics has meticulously designed every aspect of their subs to optimize frequency response, from the lightweight drivers and cones to the circuitry within. The goal? To reduce the gap between the moment music calls for a subwoofer and the instant it delivers that deep, resonant bass.

This isn’t a matter of seconds—we’re talking milliseconds. A truly immersive experience demands not only depth but also timing. The subwoofers’ high-level inputs connect the subwoofer to the same amplifier used by your speakers, providing the ‘flavor’ of the amp. This ‘blends’ the subwoofer with the speakers, so the subwoofer disappears into the music with perfect timing.

2. Power

Power is the heartbeat of a subwoofer, and here REL Acoustics doesn’t compromise. REL subwoofers can play as loud—and as quiet—as the moment calls for, thanks to robust amplifiers with plenty of power and incredibly light drivers. Even its smallest subwoofers, like the HT/1003 offer impressive output at 300 watts. For reference, REL’s larger subwoofers reach up to 1,000 watts!

REL’s amps deliver more power than required, because they’re designed and built to be far more capable than necessary. This allows the amplifiers to perform peacefully without being pushed to the max, and will run smoothly for decades to come.

3. Craftsmanship

Subwoofers aren’t typically known for their good looks. As large, bulky boxes, they’re often the most contentious piece of an audio system. If your spouse isn’t enthusiastic about high-end audio, it may be tricky convincing them a subwoofer belongs in the living room.

REL understands that subwoofers have long been regarded as ugly black boxes and strives to make them as small as possible with thoughtfully designed cabinets and beautiful lacquered finishes. To produce more bass in a smaller cabinet, REL uses passive radiators. Passive radiators aren’t an active driver, but rather an additional diaphragm that vibrates as the sub’s internal air pressure changes as the active driver moves in response to the signal.

REL subwoofers are even available in white, which is quite unusual! We find their white subwoofers are incredibly popular, especially for living rooms and dens (but perhaps not in dark home theaters).
