What Does Mini LED Mean?
Mini LED is an evolution of traditional LED-LCD visual technology. It uses thousands of tiny LEDs as a backlight for an LCD panel, enabling more precise local dimming compared to traditional LED-LCD screens.
While they sound similar, Mini LEDs are not the same as micro LEDs, wherein each pixel is made of microscopic LEDs. Mini LED TVs, like the Bravia 9, still use an LCD panel and backlight system, whereas micro LEDs don’t need a backlight panel.
And then there are OLED TVs, where each pixel ‘organically’ produces its own light. All three types of TVs use very small LEDs to create an image, but mini LEDs, such as the Bravia 9, use them to illuminate an LCD panel.
How Do Mini LEDs Compare to OLEDs?
OLED has long been praised as the epitome of TVs today. So how does Sony’s new mini LED display compare to its OLED counterparts, like the Sony A95L?
- Color and Contrast: The Bravia 9 mini LED offers superior contrast and color compared to other LED-LCDs, but it’s slightly edged out by OLED’s perfect blacks and contrast.
- Brightness: With a new backlight in the Bravia 9, the mini LED TV achieves higher brightness levels than OLED. In fact, it is twice as bright as the A95L.
- Viewing Angles: Mini LEDs can suffer from some off-axis color shifts, but the Bravia 9 is engineered with X-Wide Angle and X-Anti Reflection technology.
- Lifespan and Burn-In: Mini LEDs like the Bravia 9 have the advantage, as they won’t suffer from potential burn-in issues that OLEDs often face.
- HDR Performance: Proper brightness settings are essential to match the intended contrast and details in highlights and shadows. Thanks to the Bravia 9’s brightness levels, it improves HDR.
- Processing: Both the Bravia 9 and A95L use Sony’s Cognitive XR processor, but the Bravia 9 includes a slightly upgraded version with new Face Detection and Scene Detection technology.
- Price: Sony’s OLEDs are generally more expensive, but the gap is narrowing as mini LED technology improves.
