There was no grand plan, birthright, or alignment of the cosmos – simply a man expecting a level of musical reproduction, well beyond what was available. So, relying upon the values instilled in his youth in the small centrally located town of Hanford, California, he decided to do something about it – and build them himself. From that day in 1977, Richard Vandersteen continues to refine the technology allowing him to capture the sound he’s heard in his head. It’s his passion – his life’s work.

Get To Know Vandersteen

Working with an audiophile boss in another industry, Richard was asked to repair a pair of top-level speakers. Like everything Richard does, he jumped in with both feet. With a natural aptitude for all things mechanical, and his electrical engineering training acquired while serving in the Air Force in Korea during the Vietnam war, Richard realized he could make a better speaker for less money. A speaker to use and enjoy himself. A speaker, known as the Model 2 shown to a dealer that insisted on offering it in Chicago at CES. A speaker that created so many orders from dealers at its first show it demanded a company be founded. After years of speaker research, Vandersteen Audio became official with these show orders in hand in 1977. Vandersteen continues to use live vs. recorded experiments and to better the replication of instruments focusing on evoking a natural emotional response. This continuing adventure started with a conventual box design, time and phase correct first-order filters, vertically aligned minimum area baffles, single drivers for frequencies above 150 Hz began to develop. These fundamental discoveries are the building blocks of all of our products to this day and are time-proven with hundreds of thousands of music lovers listening to Vandersteen today.

Why We Love Vandersteen

"Truth and accuracy to the signal received from the amplifier, with unsurpassed musicality and dimensional purity." This is the design philosophy behind Richard Vandersteen's incredible line of loudspeakers, one of the very few manufacturers that still understand the importance of phase accurate first order crossovers in a time-aligned design. Richard's innovations and patents are as numerous as they are outstanding. Perfect Piston drivers, minimal-baffle cabinets, bi-wiring, battery-biased crossovers, high-pass-filtered powered subwoofers and powered-bass speakers with built-in room EQ are a few of the examples of why his company has been and always will be a technology company. Listening to Vandersteen Audio’s speakers and electronics is such a transcendent, one-of-a-kind musical experience. To quote John Atkinson in his review of the Quatro Wood CT, "...a stereo virtual reality engine that connects you to your favorite music." I personally own the Model 7 MK IIs, and they have changed the way I listen to music. Come down to the store and take a listen with your favorite music. You will be glad you did!"
