Chat GPT Can Do Anything, Right? Could It Build A HiFi System?

We Put ChatGPT to the Test

AI-generated recommendations are everywhere. But how do they hold up when it comes to something as nuanced as hi-fi audio

Our audio dealers have spent years (even decades) learning about hi-fi sound systems, developing an ear for audio intricacies. We know how to build a system for the audiophile who loves hip-hop, classical, or rock, or someone just dipping their toes into vinyl for the first time.

We know our stuff. But does ChatGPT, too? When asked about hi-fi audio, can it give recommendations comparable to our own? The HiFi Buys staff was curious. So we queried ChatGPT to see how it measures up.

First, we asked ChatGPT how to get started with hi-fi audio.

ChatGPT starts by suggesting we choose our listening sources: digital, analog, or CDs/ripping, with suggested products like the Bluesound Node streamer and Rega Planar 3 turntable. Hm. Those are good brands. We like those, too.

Next, it tells us to pick our amplification, and suggests popular amplifier brands, like NAD, Marantz, Rotel, Yamaha. From there, it moves on to speakers, saying, “Some well-respected brands: KEF, ELAC, Wharfedale, Bowers & Wilkins, Focal, Dynaudio, Klipsch.” Again, all fine brands. We carry many of those at HiFi Buys.

ChatGPT moves on to cables and accessories, telling us, “Don’t overspend early—solid, well-shielded speaker cables and interconnects are sufficient to start. Later, consider power conditioners, better isolation platforms, room treatments, etc.”

So…what do we think?

ChatGPT is actually a fine place to start. But…

When we ask the internet for audio recommendations, we’re going to be led to the most popular, most-reviewed products. And many of them are great—don’t get us wrong! ChatGPT is a good tool to learn about audio and what enthusiasts are already talking about online.

But most general advice leaves out boutique brands like Vanderstein or Magnapan that, in some cases, could be a customer’s best option. And building a hi-fi system is a nuanced process.

Even on sites like Reddit, there is very little written about building a complete system. It shouldn’t be about picking the best amp, then picking the best speakers. That’s not really how it works. There needs to be synergy between each product. One person may love a particular setup, while another person will prefer a different arrangement. Neither is necessarily right or wrong—it’s subjective.

Building a hi-fi system is personal.

We find that speakers are the most emotional purchase people make. Sound is important, of course, but you’re also considering the size, the aesthetic, where they’ll go in your house, how big the room is, etc. That’s why we always start with the speakers, then work from there.

Do you lean towards a warm, lush sound, or a more analytical, revealing presentation? If you’re just starting out, you might not know yet, and that’s okay. But that’s what your local hi-fi dealer is here for. We’ll help you try different audio products, mixing and matching to find a sound that is right for you and your tastes.

Maybe you’ll discover a speaker brand on ChatGPT and decide to check it out. That’s great! We likely carry it and have it on the floor for you to try.

Words only say so much.

ChatGPT, Reddit, and even this blog may tell you so-and-so product will create “a more dynamic sound.” But what does that really mean?

If you’re really interested in hi-fi audio, it’s not something that should be bought sight-unseen, no matter how great the reviews are (even the reviews we write!). When customers come to us (often trading in speakers they bought online), we walk through products that align with their budget and taste. We don’t push them towards anything—we’re truly just here to share the joy of music and audio.

But once you do pick a winner, we’re there to help you set up the turntable, speakers, everything. We make sure it’s dialed in perfectly and tuned right, with acoustic treatments to accommodate the room.
