Sonos Ending Software Updates to Older Products in May 2020
You have likely seen the news about Sonos ending software updates to come of their older products. According to Sonos’ press release, “The pace of innovation has stretched the capabilities of the oldest Sonos products to their technical limit. These products no longer have the memory or processing power to support future innovation.”
This does not mean you will no longer be able to use your products nor are they being “bricked.” While those listed below will no longer receive software updates, Sonos has pledged to keep them updated with bug fixes and security patches for as long as possible.
- Connect (Manufactured 2011-2015)
- Connect:Amp (Manufactured 2011-2015)
- Play:5 (Gen 1)
If you have any of these legacy products, you should have already received a notification from Sonos. If you aren’t sure if you have one of these, you can log into your Sonos account and see if any of your products will be impacted or we are happy to help you on this issue as well.
The other big issue that is getting a lot of buzz is that without these updates, some legacy products and modern products won’t be able to co-exist. Sonos is currently working on a way to “split your system” so modern products work together and get the latest features, while legacy products work together and remain in their current state. They are finalizing details on this plan, and as we learn more, we will share details as they are released.
To help soften the blow, Sonos is offering a 30% credit for each legacy product so you can “trade up” at a discount. The following products are eligible:
- Connect (sold until 2015)
- Connect:Amp (sold until 2015)
- Play:5 (Gen 1)
- All Zone Players
